I must credit my father with taking this photo. Do you remember the old box cameras? Dad’s had a flap on the top that you lifted for the viewfinder. You held the camera against your chest to steady it and looked straight down into the viewfinder to find your subject with some difficulty with your whole body getting in on the action – was the image upside-down? The film was advanced manually and there were 12 images on your black and white roll. Six to twelve months later when you’d taken your twelfth photo, you’d take the film into a camera shop to be developed and wait two weeks for your photographs, which mostly came as a surprise as you’d taken them so long ago.
Now I take a photo and send it halfway around the world in an instant. Who would have believed that?

For just 18 months in 1860/61 ponies like these (and their plucky riders) were the only means of communication between the eastern and western United States. Their legendary feat of carrying mail 1700 miles – across the Great Plains, over the Rocky Mountains – lives on in the hearts of Americans. When the Pony Express came to town in Fountain Hills AZ a great lump of unexpected national pride welled up in my chest.

I recently posted photos of Semana Santa – Easter Week – in Spain. Religious processions are solemn occasions but we’ve always been amused by the teenagers who take part in the marching bands.
The above photo was very busy so was heavily cropped to focus attention on the boys’ faces. What you can’t see is that they are all carrying wind instruments. What you can see is that they aren’t playing them.

The scene of our most raucous pub crawl was the tiny unassuming fishing village of Polperro in Cornwall. With a population of 1200 supporting six pubs you can see that these people like to party at the pub! Sadly, I didn’t take photos of the 40-something-year-old ‘schoolchildren’ or the ‘tarts and vicars’ out that night, but we finished the evening with them at The Three Pilchards on the quayside. I hope no-one strayed near the water.
