B & W Challenge #2 Polperro Pub Crawl

Polperro, Cornwall

The scene of our most raucous pub crawl was the tiny unassuming fishing village of Polperro in Cornwall. With a population of 1200 supporting six pubs you can see that these people like to party at the pub! Sadly, I didn’t take photos of the 40-something-year-old ‘schoolchildren’ or the ‘tarts and vicars’ out that night, but we finished the evening with them at The Three Pilchards on the quayside. I hope no-one strayed near the water.

Jude of Travel Words and the earth laughs in flowers has invited me to join in with this challenge. Jude is an accomplished photographer/traveler/garden enthusiast so while out and about stays grounded and records everything with wonderfully entertaining results.

There are only two rules for this challenge:

  1. On 5 consecutive days, create a post using either a past or recent photo in B&W.
  2. Each day invite another blog friend to join in the fun.

Today I would like to nominate James and Terri at Gallivance to take part in the challenge. They’ve lived in five countries and gallivanted around 61 countries in their life-long travels. From scanned photos to artfully crafted digital photos, and an eye for detail, they showcase culture and humanity in their blog posts in a most engaging way.

  1. the photo is so rich in this tone – feel the water and the different houses- and I read the above comment about what photo would have looked like – ha!

  2. A a pub crawl… I shall do this adventure one day. Who knows… I may dress for the occasion as well. 😉
Neat photo! Came out great in black and white!

    1. Jollification. I like that. I think we should organise a big blogger meet in Cornwall. Sue Slaght and Joanne Sisco are already keen and everybody, including Jude loves it there. MM at Multifarious Meanderings is from there. Wouldn’t that be fun?

  3. Thanks for the nomination and for the kind words Carol. This sounds like a fun challenge and we’ll be pulling something together soon. I’ve always thought that B&W photography separated the good photographers from the dabblers like me, but I’ll give it a go. I’ll give you a heads-up before we publish. ~James

    1. That’s brilliant, James and you’re hardly a dabbler. What a thing to say! I’d never done black and white before Jude convinced me to have a go and I enjoyed the challenge. I hope you do too.

          1. I WAS bored … My trip to the float spa solved that problem.
Now I’m saving all my nickels for this summer’s trip to Sweden. I’ll wave to you as we fly over 🙂
If only I could get Gilles interested in a race in the UK. I’ll have to start looking but I have to be careful what I ask for … He’ll expect me to do the race too 😉

              1. The London Marathon is on our list. We tried twice to get in but it’s not necessarily easy.
I was thinking more of Ironman UK in Bolton. Gilles could race and I could simply … not 🙂

  4. Haha, alcohol features regularly on this blog 😛
I don’t think I have been on a pub crawl since I was about 19 years old – and yes – that was a long time ago!!
Fab shot of the harbour – love the light and the clarity of this photo. You do B&W well my friend 🙂

  5. Hmmm….a post about a pub this time. My dear, I’m starting to become seriously concerned. 🙂 LOL Oh, well, am convincing myself that with a transatlantic move and all that comes with it, there is a reason for all this excessive focus on pubs/alcohol, etc. 🙂 Lovely pic! Sounds like a wonderful outing!

    1. Oh no! ! forgot you would see this! In my defense, pubs are part of the British culture. And with drink/drive laws being what they are pubs are closing down at an alarming rate. I’m only trying to preserve some of these cultural treasures. And in case you think we may be breaking the law, that’s why we crawl!

      1. Ahhhh….so you are now preserving national heritage! I see! I see! That makes huge difference, of course. Proceed at will! Long Live the Queen! 🙂

          1. Hah! That is very true! You are too much! Making me laugh this much is probably much more dangerous to one’s health than your pub crawls…..

    1. WP playing tricks on me today. I haven’t replied to you have I Sue? Sounds like I’ve started drinking already. Anyway . . . . I need to go back to Cornwall to take some more photos. Want to come?

            1. If we fail to find you a cold bottle of Bud, we’ll stick to wine. Or how about a road trip through the tunnel to stock up on wine? Not that we don’t have wine here but it’s such a fun thing to do. Don’t worry. We’ll survive. 🙂

  7. I did some memorable pub crawls when I was younger (note use of comparative) – we Cornish folk know how to party 🙂 I remember one dressed as a baby (it rained and my toweling nappy got soaked) and one dressed as Dick Whittington’s cat. People kept pulling my tail and playing with my ears.

    1. It was about ten years ago, BD. Memory’s a bit hazy but I have this image in my head of chubby 40-year-old men in short grey flannel shorts and women who should have known better with their hair in bunches and wearing short pleated skirts and fishnet stockings. I wasn’t a compulsive digital photographer then. Shame.
