During a lump-in-throat inducing rendition of the national anthem by Dr. Jesse McGuire on trumpet, not the usual warbling pop star, and due to Air Force cuts we were treated to a fly past of 50 – Fifty! – airplanes in a tight chevron pattern. Everyone pointed and stared, open-mouthed, as the single-engine planes kept in perfect formation. From the moment they appeared on the horizon, soared gracefully overhead and disappeared behind the stadium the crowd was awestruck. As Dr. J completed the Star Spangled Banner the stadium erupted! (Above video is from 2009.)
I’ve got goose bumps just thinking about it. Concerns about rain delays were forgotten as tufty white clouds and a brilliant Arizona sky formed a backdrop.
The parking lot outside the stadium was a sea of RVs with more of them littered all over the center of the track.
I had chosen to support a few drivers to increase my odds of picking a winner: Jimmie Johnson, because he is quite good-looking; Dale Earnhardt, Jr. because he won at Daytona and he seemed a good prospect; A.J. Allmendinger because he has the same initials as my son and you’ve just got love that last name; and Paul Menard because his car is so pretty.
For me, the racing is incidental to the rest of the excitement.
For those of you who feel that racing being incidental is a heinous statement, I took some photos of the racing.
My criteria for choosing winners needs some revising as Kevin Harvick took the trophy.
If you just like the noise, turn your volume right up and watch and listen to a restart.
My ears are still ringing.
By the way, did you know that if you put in silicone putty earplugs and then eat crisps/potato chips the noise inside your skull is phenomenal. It sounds like the world is coming to an end.
This post put a big smile on my face and I’m not even a race car fan. Must try your potato chip trick soon!

Hahaha! I think I have a particularly thick skull. It reverberates the noise well! 😆

Thank you so much. I never thought about the “Cars” movie while we were there. I guess the scale and the deafening noise precluded that. Now I’m going to put my earplugs in and go brush my teeth. Like you, I’m easily amused! Haha 😆

It was a great day. There is always a carnival atmosphere. You don’t need to know anything about motor racing (like me) to enjoy yourself!

It would have been a great way to spend the weekend except that we had torrential rain on Saturday. I didn’t envy them that!

Good show! Having lived close to Dover, Delaware, I always did everything possible to stay away from NASCAR. Now, I feel like I’ve been there, great photos and story.

I’d love to be in the infield in an RV, just not ours. It would need to be one of those big $$$ jobs with rooftop terrace, Jacuzzi, bowling alley – you know the sort of thing! 😆

I love racing and never miss a F1 on TV unfortunately we don’t get too many of these type races shown here, but I’d watch them if we did… love the photos…

We followed F1 for years (only on TV unfortunately) but it isn’t popular in the U.S.. Big shiny NASCAR captures everyone’s (well, race fans anyway) attention.

Gotta say, I hadn’t pegged you for the Nascar type, hence my previous blog comment. Those are my own stereotypes though [shielding self from the anger of Nascar fan readers…]. Does look exciting though! The fly by sounded awesome!

Now what makes you think I wouldn’t fit in there? Would it be my serious lack of piercings and tattoos? Not enough exposed flesh when in public? Not prone to excessive beer drinking? I saw some interesting people. The wardrobe choices kept me entertained for the afternoon. If I were an intrepid (or surreptitious) photojournalist I could have posted some really fascinating pictures.

LOVE the way you picked your winners–sounds like me when I fill out my brackets for the office NCAA pool (which I actually WON one year much to the irritation of several hard-core basketball fanatics). Watching the pit crews is my favorite part of watching big races on TV!

Hahaha! A fellow “race” fan! I actually completely enjoyed the day. It’s always such a spectacle. And in typical American fashion, perfectly well organised. 🙂
