The Charge of the Ground Squirrels

ground squirrel, San Clemente CA

I can’t think why I’d been baking when we were camping atΒ the San Clemente State Park on the beautiful southern California coast just south of Los Angeles but the scent of ginger had caught the attention of the local residents.

Where is that delicious smell coming from?

    1. We were having lunch in Florida and a bird stole a French fry as my sister-in-law was eating. It was halfway from her plate to her mouth. She yelled. We threw our hats. She was not amused. 😯

  1. These little guys have serious sniffers. I have had one inside my back pack at a climbing crag. He was after my trail mix. Not sure who got a bigger surprise upon our meeting. πŸ™‚

      1. There was definitely screaming…I think it was me and not the squirrel. He high tailed it out in a hurry. The funny thing is that not ten minutes later the little brat was back sniffing at my pack again. Relentless rodent! πŸ™‚

  2. hee hee! so super cute! I love feeding these guys by hand even though I know we’re not supposed to like them. We have an albino one nearby too which is pretty cool.

  3. Squirrels are devilish little thieves. I once put a freshly baked pie outside to cool. Some time later when I went back to retrieve it, I found its entire outer rim had been methodically nibbled off. It had never occurred to me that a squirrel would like pie – Husband was not amused πŸ™‚

    1. They don’t take much encouragement. We fed them peanuts when we were camped in WA but commented that we would never have done that if we’d been at home. I hope the permanent residents aren’t still cursing us!

  4. Oh, I love squirrels, never see them here or in Australia. I did see one when I lived in the UK from 2002-4 and was SO excited! And Bulldog – congratulations on the poetry, ginger biscuits are obviously inspiring!

  5. Now I want a ginger biscuit…

I can sniff some ginger biscuits
but now I seemed to have missed it
    As Carols in California
    and I’m in Victoria.

    I wonder where Victoria is???

      1. This editing is not easy… I send chapters to the Editor as I finish them and she sends them back faster than I can keep up… but she is brilliant and the returned portions are just “out of this world” good… but when one is seeing double and then it becomes treble, it is time to have a look at something else…

  6. I tell ya, my little RV oven does an amazing job in the baking dept. Although everything needs to be miniaturized…..kind of like an ‘easy bake oven’…..warms the RV too!
